Get ready for more snow: weekend to bring flurries in unexpected places

This week had snowfall in unexpected places with 20-30cm in alpine areas and also dustings of snow and snow flurries to parts of NSW (Central and Northern ranges) and Queensland (The Granite Belt) that are quite rare.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Sarah Scully told ACM that more snow was on the way.

Ms Scully said alpine areas were set for 30-50cm over the weekend.

"That cold front will bring rain, damaging winds small hail, snow to low levels and blizzard conditions for alpine areas," she said.

Areas less known for snow in Victoria could also experience snow flurries including the Grampians (Mount William) and the Central Ranges (Mount Macedon and Ballarat).

The Central Tablelands in NSW could also experience snow on Saturday and Sunday, she said.

"Snow dusting is possible....above 1100m on Saturday into Sunday."

Icy conditions with damaging winds and blizzard conditions will hit southern parts of South Australia's Mount Lofty ranges which will push into elevated parts of eastern Victoria and south-east NSW on Friday and into Saturday.

And Canberrans should expect possible hail on Saturday morning with windy temperatures.

"The maximum temperature will only be nine degrees but it is going to feel a lot colder than that because of the gusty winds," Ms Scully said.
