Victoria Police is investigating the theft of an "extremely rare race car" stolen from Toorak in Melbourne's south-east.

At around 5.30am on March 9, police found the race car on Grange Road, a couple of streets away from where it was stolen.
The car thieves abandoned the Brabham BT 21 after damaging the clutch - police said the 1960's race car, one of six in the world, is now "undrivable".
Investigators believe the car was stolen sometime between 11.30pm on March 8 and 4am on March 9 from a Hill Street property.

The car is light and nimble, weighing around 410 kilograms, with a fibreglass body and a chassis made from space frame.
