Guzman y Gomez submits plans for first Tamworth franchise on Bridge Street NBN Television site

If approved, a franchise would replace the old NBN TV station at 226 Bridge Street in South Tamworth, with the existing building to be demolished.

Tamworth is already well-serviced by fast food outlets, and has among the worst obesity problems in the country.

The city opened its first Taco Bell and its fourth McDonalds in 2021, and there are plans for a second Hungry Jack's also on Bridge Street.

But in its DA, the company claims that its new store "offers a quality and healthy food option and meets the present and future demand for reliable food outlets in the area".

"The proposal is expected to have an ongoing positive social impact with respect to providing a convenient food and drink outlet to serve residents and passing motorists in the local and wider Tamworth region," the company says.

According to the project's development application, the outlet would operate around the clock.

"It is proposed to seek a 24-hour, seven-days a week approval for the operation of the development," the application says.

"The centre will operate with a total of 80 staff with an average 12 staff onsite at any given time during the day and a minimum of three staff on at any given time during the night."

The new development would include 20 car parking spaces and would only be accessible via King Street.

A spokesperson for the company told the Leader last year that its new store was scheduled to open in July 2022, complete with a drive-thru and dine-in area.

The NBN Television Centre, which currently occupies the lot, was officially opened in December 1996.
