WERRIS Creek locals were given a rude awakening on Sunday morning as a 3.0 magnitude earthquake rocked the Liverpool Plains town.

Striking at around 1.30am, the quake originated just four kilometres south-east of the city centre, and could be felt in surrounding areas such as Tamworth, Quirindi and Breeza.

Fortunately, minimal damage has been reported at the time of writing, although it was enough to give quite a few people a fright.
Locals reported they were woken up by the first tremor, and while some were initially unsure what had happened, it was made obvious a few minutes later when an aftershock occurred.
