Tamworth local dies with COVID-19 as NSW Health confirms 15 deaths in NSW on Wednesday and 201 new Tamworth cases

The resident is among 15 people who died with the virus across the state in the latest reporting period, NSW Health announced.

Details surrounding the Tamworth resident are not public but NSW Health confirmed 11 men and four women had died with the virus.

Three people were in their early 60s, two were in their 70s, five were in their 80s and five were in their 90s.

Two of the 15 people who tragically died were not vaccinated.

Eight deaths were reported in the Sydney area and one death each was reported in the Central Coast, Riverina, Newcastle, Grafton, mid-coast region, northern NSW and Tamworth.

NSW Health reported 25,235 new positive test results in the 24 hours to 4pm on Tuesday.

That number included 15,365 positive rapid antigen tests and 9870 positive PCR tests.

The Hunter New England Health (HNEH) district added 3184 new cases of COVID-19 in the latest reporting period.

Of those, 201 were from Tamworth, 57 were from Armidale, 11 are from Glen Innes, 80 are from Gunnedah, eight are from the Gwydir, 42 were from Inverell, 35 were from the Liverpool Plains and 36 were from Moree.

There were 18 found in Narrabri, one in Tenterfield, three in Uralla and 15 in Walcha.

There are 63 people being cared for in HNEH hospitals and five are in intensive care units.

The thousands of new cases across the district come as some Tamworth schools reintroduce mask-wearing and at least one daycare centre remains closed.

In an email sent to carers on Tuesday, seen by the Leader, the daycare centre confirmed it could be closed for up to a week as COVID-19 infections spread.

Exceptions were made for vulnerable children and the kids of essential workers.

The centre said isolation requirements for staff members left it with little choice.

It indicated it would reopen when recommended staff to child ratios return to normal, expected from Monday.
