About 4.20am on Tuesday, January 4, police said emergency services were called to Nowra Lane, near Worrigee Street, following reports a man had been found unconscious with abdominal wounds.
South Coast Police District officers attended and commenced CPR prior to the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.
Despite their efforts, the man died at Shoalhaven Hospital a short time later.
The man is yet to be formally identified.
South Coast Police District Commander Superintendent Greg Moore said while investigations are early, the death is being treated as suspicious.
"The death is suspicious at this stage," he said. "A well resourced strikeforce has been established to get to the bottom of what's occurred."
Superintendent Moore called on anyone who may have CCTV or dash cam footage to come forward.
"We are seeking support of the community or anyone that might have been in the vicinity of Nowra Lane, Worrigee Street or the Princes Highway in the early hours of this morning to check your dashcam footages or any CCTV that you may have access to," he said.
"Or if anyone's done anything suspicious in the area at that hour of the morning, please come forward and contact Nowra detectives."
Investigations into the incident are underway, and police are urging anyone with information, or who may have dashcam vision from the area, to come forward. Contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.
