Prosecutors confirm charges against Carl Shane Hames after alleged machete attack and robbery in Tamworth

Prosecutors confirmed the allegations they would press ahead with against Carl Shane Hames, 43, in Tamworth Local Court last week.

Solicitor Max Dixon from the state prosecuting authority, the DPP, told the court a charge of robbery armed with an offensive weapon that caused grievous bodily harm had been certified for the district court.

An allegation of demanding property with menaces and the intent to steal was also confirmed, while the charge of reckless wounding was listed in the alternative.

Charges of taking and detaining with the intent to gain an advantage, as well as reckless wounding, both in the company of others, were dropped. No pleas have been entered.

Aboriginal Legal Service solicitor Joseph Healy told the court a date had not been set for lawyers on both sides to meet and discuss the case.

"I have only just come into this matter," Mr Healy said at the time.

Hames remains behind bars and made no application for bail. The matter was adjourned to February.

Police claim a 72-year-old man met with a pair he didn't know at a Bent Street home in Tamworth on the afternoon of June 19.

Hames is accused of threatening the older man and demanding cash before fleeing.

Police allege the older man was inside a house on Edinburgh Street a few days later when Hames emerged from a bedroom wielding a machete and demanding money before slashing the older man's hand.

The police case is that Hames stole the man's bank card and withdrew cash before the older man was driven to hospital.
