Wee Waa High School plans: State Significant Development application lodged for new multi-million dollar Wee Waa High School

The much-anticipated State Significant Development (SSD) application and artist impressions opened for public feedback on Tuesday, five months after the education department announced it would build a brand new school on a different site.

The application seeks consent to construct a school with a capacity of up to 200 students in a series of two-storey buildings located on Mitchell Street, adjacent to the town's public school.

The plans include an Indigenous learning centre, sporting fields, library, multipurpose hall and a new agricultural and environment centre with future capacity for 300 students subject to funding.

After concerns about the proposed site which is a low-lying area prone to water lying on it, Wee Waa High School P&C president Merrill Johnson said changes to the redevelopment plan have included substantial flood mitigation.

"The inclusion of big drains around the blocks will hopefully prevent any water from flooding the site," she said.

She added that the community are keen to gather and discuss the plans after numerous setbacks due to COVID-19, and encouraged the community to attend an information session at the Wee Waa Bowling Club on Wednesday afternoon.

"It's a really good chance for the community to have a look at the plans that are there, have their say, talk to the builders and the architects," she said.

"I'm just encouraging everyone to go down there, have a look and have their say and if they've got concerns they haven't been able to raise so far, to raise it at the meeting."

The high school will continue to operate from the temporary set up at Wee Waa Public School until the project is completed.

In the NSW 2021 to 22 Budget, $37.8 million was invested into building the new school, with construction is due to begin in early 2022 and is expected to be finished by the end of 2022.

An investigation into the source of the mystery illness which forced the old school to close is continuing.
