Tamworth COVID update Monday: Moree, Inverell and Tamworth record cases in single digits

Five new infections were recorded in Tamworth, two in Inverell and one in Moree.

In Tamworth, one lives in Oxley Vale, one is from South Tamworth and three are from Tamworth.

Moonbi Public School has been closed, while Nemingha Public School has re-opened.

Public health physician Dr David Durrheim said with vaccination rates across the district starting to reach the 90 per cent mark the community are well protected.

"We're seeing that the virus is actually burning itself out," he said.

However, in areas with lower vaccination coverage, Dr Durrheim said the virus would continue to find gaps until everyone was vaccinated.

"The big burden is currently falling on First Nations people," he said.

"We're seeing that Aboriginal vaccine coverage is lagging behind by 15 to 20 per cent in our larger Aboriginal communities.

"We really don't want to see the virus wreaking havoc in these communities as we have seen in places like Moree, Inverell and the Midland Coast."

Across the Hunter New England Health district, 44 cases were reported, 23 were infectious in the community, 13 were isolating while infectious, and eight are still under investigation.

Cases across the state are continuing to drop with 165 new infections recorded.
