WHEN the drought killed off hundreds of young trees at the Tamworth mountain bike park following its opening in 2014, organisers were devastated, but they are confident their latest efforts will be rewarded.

On Sunday morning dozens of volunteers made their way down to the park to plant around 100 native trees, which will eventually provide a major boost to the area according to mountain bikers club president Alyssa Rogan.
"We have a focus at the park here about maintaining its natural beauty and looking after the terrain here, and creating a beautiful space for people to come and exercise and spend time in," she said.
That focus dates back to the park's opening, but Ms Rogan said conditions back then were much less favourable.
"When we opened the park in 2014 we planted about 1000 trees right in the middle of a drought, and lost most of them," she said.

"So this was just too good of an opportunity with all of the rain we've had recently, and you can tell digging into the so that the soil is doing really well.
"So anything we put it now, we will be really taking time to make sure it's spot-fertilised and mulched and protected from elements, and we're hopeful our retention rate is going to be a lot higher that last time around."
While Jeff Benson coordinated the event, Ms Rogan looked after the volunteer side of things and was glad to see a number of community members show up, including a group of kids from Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School.
She said many hands make light work, and it was encouraging to see people show up that aren't even mountain bike riders, but just bush walkers or good members of the community.
