A SUSPICIOUS blaze ripped through an empty Tamworth home before dawn and police are now investigating how it broke out.

Oxley police were out patrolling just after 5am on Thursday when they noticed smoke pouring from a house on Green Street.
Firefighters from the South Tamworth station rushed to extinguish the blaze but part of the house was destroyed after being ravaged by the flames.
Police said the house was unoccupied at the time and no injuries were reported.

A crime scene was set up at the Green Street home and detectives combed the scene for clues as the investigation into the suspicious fire continues.
Police are appealing to the public for any information as well as CCTV or dashcam footage from the area at the time.
