McCrossin's Mill Museum Uralla: volunteers wanted for historic local museum

Uralla museum coordinators Annie and Kent Mayo have put out a cry for help, as volunteer numbers dwindle due to their vintage.

"The museum prides itself on being open every day of the year, even Christmas Day," Mrs Mayo said.

"That's really something for a small town museum to be able to do that, and we need a lot of volunteers to keep the place open because the base is dwindling.

"Besides age, a couple of our volunteers have passed away recently through serious health issues so it's really come to a head in the last year or so, the need for more volunteers."

Built in 1870, McCrossin's is a restored three-storey flour mill that is now home to award-winning exhibitions, Depression-era tin toys and even a revolver used in a shoot-out by the notorious Captain Thunderbolt.

There's no experience needed to volunteer, just a welcoming attitude and an interest in local history, Mrs Mayo said.

"There's a few of us who can teach people what they need to know, we would really love some younger people to volunteer, it would be wonderful," she said.

"Uralla is now quite famous for its cafes and pubs which is great, but I think the museum is terribly important to the town and I think it really helped start the revival in Uralla."
