Quirindi Library offer free sunflower seeds for local competition

The Sunflowers on the Plains Facebook page has launched their sunflower growing competition with the hope that the vibrant yellow blooms will bring joy to the community and support local business.

Liverpool Plains Shire Council Mayor Doug Hawkins is calling farmers, community groups and home gardeners to get involved and grab their seeds in time for what is hoped to be a great sunflower season.

"I want to thank those social media groups like Sunflowers on the Plains and Wallabadah Community Noticeboard, who are promoting this wonderfully visual crop, grown on the Plains," he said.

With help from this year's wet spring, Cr Hawkins said council was excited to see the spectacular oilseed crop come into bloom and organisers are encouraging locals to get planting now to make sure their seeds are ready for judgement in January.

Cr Hawkins urged everyone to enter the competition and make the most of the free seed packs.

"Free sunflower seeds can be picked up at the Quirindi Library's seed library," he said.

With a variety of competition categories, prizes are up for grabs for the biggest sunflower, peoples choice and the most sunflowers in bloom.

Cr Hawkins hoped to see the whole community get involved and encouraged local businesses to decorate their windows or plant their own seeds.
