Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) cancel flood watch for Peel and Namoi rivers but Tamworth still expected to get soaking rain

Grey and gloomy skies are set to hang around over the city with heavy rain forecast into Tuesday.

A further 20mm could be dumped on Tamworth overnight and tomorrow, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), but the predictions drop back to just a couple of millimetres for the rest of the week.

Tamworth's weather station clocked a drop more than 26mm of the wet stuff in the 24 hours to 9am on Monday.

The head of the Peel River, near Nundle, was drenched with 43.4mm in that time, most of which gurgles downstream into Chaffey Dam.

The water supply remains full, and Water NSW data shows it was at 101.5 per cent on Monday afternoon.

The BoM issued initial flood watches for the Peel River and Namoi River over the weekend due to the rain that was expected, but had already cancelled the alerts by Monday.

A flood watch remains in place for the Gwydir River.

Locals are reminded to never enter floodwaters.
