Hillvue Public School in Tamworth closed for deep cleaning after school community member tests positive to COVID-19

All staff and students have been asked to self isolate and follow all advice from NSW Health.

A spokesperson from the NSW Department of Education confirmed the Tamworth primary school on Hillvue Road would close until further notice while cleaning and contact tracing takes place.

Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson urged the community to stay safe and "look after each other" as the local outbreak continues to worsen.

"It's important to ensure that all necessary health advice is adhered to and take all necessary precautions to minimise the risk of further transmission to support our community," he said in a statement on Friday morning.

"The NSW Department of Education is working closely with NSW Health to ensure the safety of all students and staff."

The school's executive principal Theressa Miles confirmed the school would not be operational on Friday.

She said the safety and wellbeing of staff and students was of "paramount importance" at all times.

"While we recognise this will be disruptive and inconvenient for families, it is important that we follow NSW Health advice," she said in a statement.

Tamworth recorded eight new COVID-19 cases in yesterdays update, with more expected today.

Carinya Christian School has also released a statement to warn the community a parent has tested positive to the virus.

The student involved, in Year 7, has tested negative but is considered a household contact, principal David Jones said.

In this case there is no action required and the school remains operational, he said.

Further updates are expected and he said he wished the family well in recovery.

Anyone in the community who feels unwell should seek a COVID-19 swab at the Plain Street drive-through, the Tamworth hospital, the respiratory clinic or Douglass Hanly Moir.

Further exposure sites, including Ten Tops store in Tamworth, have been listed for Tamworth.
