Tamworth Olympic Pool: sports manager Paul Kelly announces pools will open on schedule, Olympic Pool to remain closed in the mornings

The unheated Olympic Pool on Kable Avenue won't be open in the mornings until the weather warms up.

The city pool will open on Tuesday from midday, and may not open in the mornings for weeks with temperatures forecast to remain chilly for the forseeable future.

Tamworth Regional Council sports and recreation manager Paul Kelly said the freezing pool won't attract enough swimmers in the morning to justify employing two staff until the weather heats up.

"All the swimming club and the key users groups are actually using the Scully Park Pool for the first month," he said.

"It'll open at 5.30am come Tuesday morning and the Olympic Pool will open from midday each day."

Council is required to employ two people to monitor the pool under Royal Life Saving Society regulations.

Mr Kelly said council would decide "week-to-week" about when to fully open the city pool.

"We appreciate that there's some passionate people who love to use this site, and I understand that," he said.

"However, logistically, it doesn't make sense to open up a facility paying two staff from five until 12. That's two staff, that's fourteen hours. It doesn't make any sense to pay fourteen hours a day for a small number of people when we can easily accommodate them over there with the others. And that other pool is temperature-controlled."

All six council-run pools in the region open on Tuesday.

The Olympic Pool was an fresh 18 degrees on Friday morning and it can get even colder on spring nights when temperatures hit single digits.

The pool closed a month early in March this year for the same reason, cold weather and a lack of use.

Both Scully and the city pools are in good condition and the council doesn't expect any problems with maintenance.

"Our filtration has never been better, on our sites," Mr Kelly said.

"We continue to do regular maintenance at our sites."
