Born in Merriwa, Walmsley played most of his junior footy at the Thoroughbreds before joining South Newcastle Lions where he was the club's leading try scorer in their title-winning 2018 season.
In 2020, Walmsley moved to the UK to join Whitehaven RLFC in The Betfred Championship, the second division of British rugby league, in an effort to make the Scotland team for the now postponed 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

After a strong season with Whitehaven, the 23-year-old Walmsley has been named to the Scottish 'Bravehearts' squad, his eligibility coming courtesy of his Scottish grandfather.
The Bravehearts squad is the first put together in nearly two years as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and they are set to face Jamaica's 'Reggae Warriors' for the very first time on October 24 in Featherstone, England.
Head Coach Nathan Graham will put Walmsley through his paces at a training camp before naming a final squad.

"We'll look at how everyone performs and finalise a 20 man squad for a four day camp before the game," Graham said.
"I'm looking for the young guys to be really competitive in training and push themselves with a view to being in the 20."
The news comes as Whitehaven confirmed Walmsley will no longer be with the club next season amidst rumours of a potential signing for a Super League club.
Whitehaven club director Ashley Kilpatrick was full of praise for Walmsley after the club announced the Australian would depart next season.
"Lachlan has been a revelation since we brought him over, both on and off the field, completely buying into the ethos of the club," Mr Kilpatrick said.

"We did make Lachlan an offer to stay, a very good offer in fact, however clearly it wasn't enough to keep him here."
Walmsley played 23 games across all competitions for Whitehaven, scoring 16 tries and kicking 75 goals.
