Safety and freedom from lockdown at the heart of businesses' plans to vaccinate staff

Hospitality and tourism industries have been amongst the hardest hit by COVID restrictions, so it makes sense they would be among the most desperate to see NSW reach its vaccination targets.

That's why local businessman, Jye Segboer, who owns CH Boutique Hotel, Deco Wine Bar & Restaurant and Hopscotch cafe, organised for all his willing and eligible staff to receive the jab last Saturday.

While Tamworth may come out of lockdown this weekend - a decision is expected to be announced on Thursday - Mr Segboer said it was crucial to see the whole state open up.

"Our industry is one of the industries that's suffering tremendously with lockdowns, and for us being in the accommodation sector we'll continue to suffer until we see major cities open back up for travel," he said.

"Because that's where the majority of our market comes from, whilst our restaurants enjoy our local market, our accommodations which is the largest part of our businesses is suffering immensely."

He said the benefit was twofold; vaccinations would bring an end to restrictions one step closer, as well as protect his staff and make them feel safer.

Mr Segboer is not alone in his desire to see workers safeguarded from the virus, with Tamworth Business Chamber president Stephanie Cameron revealing her support for it.

"I think it is a smart idea and it would be great for businesses to be able to organise that with the local medical centres that are providing vaccinations," she said.

"Plus then you know your staff are safe, especially if your staff come in contact with a range of people and maybe if they have to go to various sites around the region."

West Entertainment Group chief executive Rod Laing, whose outlets around the region employ 130 people, has also expressed interest in the idea.

"We've been looking at incentives, and we haven't fully laid these down yet, but we're looking at the possibilities," he said.

"His idea and concept are extremely great and particularly from the work safety point of view as well, and solely from that side of it we're responsible for every employee when they start work."

Mr Segboer is pleased other businesses are looking to be part of the solution, and also heaped praise on Dr Ian Kamerman and the team at Northwest Health who are looking to facilitate any workplaces wanting to do a similar thing.
