Huge Doughboy Wind Farm project featuring skyscraper-tall turbines planned for New England

The developer of Glen Innes' huge White Rock wind farm has revealed plans for an even larger 52-turbine wind project in the New England.

The enormous 312-megawatt Doughboy Wind Farm project will also contain a 100 megawatt lithium-ion battery.

All told, the project would have enough juice to power 110,000 NSW homes.

Epuron Projects, which developed both Glen Innes White Rock wind turbine projects, plans to build the huge turbines about 30 kilometres east of Armidale, if they get sign-off from the state government.

The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) issued the environmental assessment requirements last week, setting it on the path for an environmental impact statement and ultimately public display.

According to the project's scoping report, the 17,000 hectare site is not located within any sensitive areas and does not encroach onto the nearby Cathedral Rock National Park.

"Generally, the wind turbines have been positioned along a series of ridges surrounding Doughboy Mountain and have been located away rural communities in the area," it said.

"The project land is freehold land used for sheep and cattle grazing purposes, although there are a number of small parcels of Crown land within the project boundary. The project is located on an existing high voltage overhead transmission line corridor - the existing 330 kV transmission line operated by Transgrid."

The village of Wollomombi is about five kilometres south of the proposed turbines, with Wongwibinda located at the northern end of the project boundary.

Construction could begin within six months of approval, and would take about 18 months to complete.

Once Epuron Projects have a development application, the project will go to public consultation for comment.

When it was approved in 2018, Glen Innes' Sapphire wind project was the state's largest wind farm, with about 270 megawatts of capacity, dwarfing White Rock's 175 megawatts.

DPIE will ultimately approve or reject the state significant scheme.

Some $8 billion worth of renewable energy projects are working their way through the planning system in the New England region alone. The area has been designated to become the country's largest renewable energy zone.
