Tamworth all-female firefighter crew: Katlyn Nielsen, Min McDonald and Kylie Grimes prove gender doesn't matter when you fight like a girl

South Tamworth Fire Station unit celebrated a historic day this week with the first all-female crew on deck to protect the public.

With a combined total of almost 15 years experience between firefighters Katlyn Nielsen, Kylie Grimes and Min McDonald, the important thing wasn't their gender, but proving it didn't matter, Ms Nielsen said.

"Even when I first started there were women, but there weren't a lot," she said.

"I was one of two in a station in Sydney.

"Yesterday was an exciting moment for all of us personally, not because of our gender but because we proved it didn't matter.

"We love coming to work, doing our job and serving our community - we are proud to be female firefighters but just firefighters first and foremost."

Ms Nielsen is from Bendemeer and has worked as a firefighter for seven years.

While the trio have worked at the same station for some time, this week marked their first shift together and Ms Nielsen said she has all the confidence in the world working in an all-female team.

"I think if one young girl sees that and wants to be a firefighter or police officer or anything in a male-dominated industry, I think we've done our job," she said.

"If a young girl came up to me I would do everything I could to help her, it's the best job in the world - I love it and everyone I know who does it loves it."
