The 83-year-old female driver, sole occupant of the vehicle, suffered fatal injuries after she crashed into a passenger train in Armidale, police said.
At about 5.25pm on Wednesday, emergency services responded to reports of a crash involving a Honda Jazz motor vehicle and a train at a level crossing on Old Gostwyck Road.
There were no reports of anyone on the train suffering any injuries.
Officers from New England Police District were called to the scene at about 5.25pm, secured a crime scene and started an investigation.
The roadway and rail line was expected to remain closed last night, and motorists were urged to avoid the area.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
