Tamworth break-ins: 17-year-old man charged with break-and-enter, and stealing ute refused bail after arrest in Calala

Police responded to reports of a stolen ute and two attempted break-and-enters in the early hours of Tuesday when they claim they saw a 17-year-old man running from a nearby property.

Oxley officers were called to a house on Duri Road in Hillvue just before 2am on Tuesday, after reports a Nissan Navara had been stolen from outside the home.

Not long after, police were called to a Calala Lane address, in Calala, after they were alerted to an attempted break and enter.

Officers immediately made inquiries and tracked down the Nissan Navara ute, which was parked at the intersection of Darrel Road and Myrene Avenue in Calala.

Police said another call came in at about 3am, reporting another attempted break and enter at a home on Warrah Drive, in the same part of town.

Police investigating the reports claim they saw a man running from the area towards where the alleged stolen ute had been found.

The teenager allegedly fled on foot when police attempted to stop him, and officers gave chase.

The 17-year-old man was arrested after a short foot pursuit, and police claim a search of the teenager revealed two knives, a small amount of illegal drugs, a set of gloves, a face mask, and a multitool.

The young man was taken to Tamworth Police Station and charged with a string of property crime offences.

Police said the 17-year-old is facing charges of aggravated break and enter; taking and driving a vehicle without consent from the owner; possessing housebreaking implements; entering a prescribed premises of a person without a lawful excuse; custody of a knife in a public place; and possessing a prohibited drug.

The teenager was refused bail and will remain in custody until his next appearance in Tamworth Children's Court in September.
