DPP prosecutors confirm charges against Scott William Newman, accused of supplying drugs in Tamworth, Werris Creek

Scott William Newman appeared in Tamworth Local Court last week where the state prosecuting authority, the DPP, confirmed which allegations they would pursue and which ones they would drop.

Three charges against the 31-year-old man, including a kidnapping allegation, were withdrawn in court, while others were certififed by the Crown.

Newman has been behind bars and bail refused since he was taken into custody in January, now more than six months ago.

After four listings for charge certification in the local court, prosecutors finally made some progress in Newman's case last week.

The 31-year-old is facing charges of supplying prohibited drugs on an ongoing basis; supplying a prohibited drug; and recruiting another person to assist in carrying out a criminal activity.

Another drug supply charge was withdrawn in court during the mention; along with dealing with the proceeds of crime; and conspiracy to take or detain a person in company with the intent to obtain an advantage.

A separate allegation of supplying cannabis was listed by the DPP as a related charge.

Newman has not yet been required to enter pleas to any of the charges against him.

The matter has been plagued by ongoing delays, after the court previously heard the police officer-in-charge of the case, as well as the second officer-in-charge, had been on leave.

Newman was arrested after a specialist police squad code-named Strike Force Catkin homed in on him in Werris Creek in January.

The breakthrough came as part of an investigation into drug supply in the Tamworth and Werris Creek areas.

Newman made no application for his release last week, and he was formally refused bail.

The case was adjourned to August.
