Tamworth, Gunnedah wake up to coldest morning of the year with widespread frost as temperatures plummet

The temperature dropped to -4.7 degrees on Monday morning at Tamworth Airport according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), the lowest recorded all year.

The freezing conditions were on par with last year's coldest morning, when the mercury dropped to a chilly -4.7 degrees in August.

At Gunnedah Airport, the temperature reached a low of -3.4 according to the BOM, also the lowest all year.

It was a similar story in Armidale, with the wintery weather covering the town in heavy frost as it recorded one of its coldest mornings of 2021 with a low of -4.1.

Across the region residents reported frozen pipes as below zero conditions, with Bendemeer and Walcha locals particularly feeling the conditions, as it dropped to -8 degrees and -7.6 degrees respectively.

A minimum of -6.1 degrees was also recorded at Glen Innes Airport.

Further frosts are likely for Tuesday, but the BOM is forecasting clear and sunny conditions to stick around until at least Friday, when there is a high chance of rain across the region.

Maximum daily temperatures are expected to peak at just 18 degrees on Thursday in Tamworth and Gunnedah.
