Mary's Mount Quarry Expansion near Gunnedah approved by Northern Regional Planning Panel

Gunnedah earthmoving company MacKellar Excavations submitted the development application, and is also waiting on state government approval to build a $3.9 million Gunnedah Waste Facility on Torrens Road, in the town's industrial estate.

The group's general manager Tim MacKellar said the the landfill application was supported in a "unanimous decision".

"They were supportive of the innovative aspect of the proposal, which is to return the quarry void back to its natural landfill at the end of the development," he said.

The company will establish a landfill in the void of the existing approved quarry at Mary's Mount, 23 kilometres outside of Gunnedah.

The project involves the progressive filling of the approved quarry void with non putrescible landfill, as well as excavated natural material and any resource recovered waste.

It will accept up to 200,000 tonnes of waste per annum.

Neighbouring landholder Julie Heiler questioned the financial viability of the expansion and it's approval before the Gunnedah Waste Facility has been given the nod.

She said she believed the "process was flawed, there was a lack of community consultation".

"Covid was used as an excuse to have smaller community meetings with a smaller number of people," she said.

MacKellar Excavations is still working on its response to submissions on the proposed Gunnedah Waste Facility to submit to the NSW Department of Planning.
