Police confirm 17-year-old girl dies in hospital after hitting tree off New England Highway at Bendemeer, north of Tamworth | UPDATE

Oxley police have confirmed the 17-year-old succumbed to her injuries in John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle earlier today.

The girl, who was behind the wheel of a Hyundai this morning, was critically injured in the crash on the New England Highway.

The girl was the sole occupant in the car when it left the road and hit a tree.

Investigations into the crash are continuing and a report will now be prepared for the coroner.

A teenager is in a critical condition after this morning's rollover and has been flown to a Newcastle hospital.

The 17-year-old girl was trapped in the wreckage of the crash for sometime and had to be rescued. She was the only occupant in the car at the time of the crash.

She was treated on scene by two critical care doctors and paramedics for serious injuries.

She was then airlifted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle in a critical condition.

Ambulance NSW Inspector James Wood confirmed the woman suffered serious head injuries.

"When we arrived on scene it was clear the vehicle had extensive damage and the woman was trapped inside," he said.

"Paramedics along with the specialist medical team worked closely to treat and carefully release the trapped woman from the car before she was airlifted to hospital."

"We really encourage anyone near or around our roads to take every precaution possible to ensure your safety."

CRITICAL care doctors and paramedics are rushing to help a teenager who has been seriously injured in a crash north of Tamworth.

The girl, believed to be 17 or 18 years old, has suffered a suspected head injury in a rollover on the New England Highway, north of Bendemeer.

Four ambulances as well as the Westpac Rescue Helicopter have been deployed to the scene.

Traffic has been stopped on the highway, about 5km or so outside of Bendemeer near the intersection of Gunnalong Road.

Ambulance NSW confirmed a critical care doctor and paramedic had been deployed by road in an ambulance as well as a second team in the rescue chopper.

The first emergency call was made about 7am for the crash.

Emergency services including police and the RFS are on scene. Alternating stop and slow traffic conditions are in place.
