Tamworth pubs and hotels look to cash in on tourism over supercharged June long weekend

As one of the most isolated public holidays on the calendar, the June long weekend is usually seen as a chance for people to get away from the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives and explore something new.

For Tamworth, that means a lot of visitors from larger cities such as Newcastle and Sydney, and people from smaller towns coming in to see what is on offer - and in 2021 there is plenty to experience.

Sport lovers will be thrilled with Tamworth Baseball's June long-weekend Carnival and the NSW Country Rugby Championships both taking place.

Tamworth Baseball expects their event to bring about 1200 people to town, and inject more than $540,000 into the local economy.

Some businesses are already feeling the positive effects from the weekend's event, with Mercure Tamworth revealing they're booked out.

"We don't have any rooms available on the Friday or the Saturday night," a spokesperson said.

"We're completely booked out and I think that most of Tamworth might be."

They said the sporting events have brought in a number of different demographics, although couples and families have been the most common.

As for the local pubs, their long weekend essentially kicked off, literally, with the first State of Origin match on Wednesday night.

Tamworth Pub Group manager Craig Power said Friday night is when it really kicks off though, with the group's gold club member $10,000 jackpot being drawn. Following that there are mass bookings on Saturday and Sunday, with events such as the pig races at The Pub drawing people in.

"During winter it can be one of our busiest periods during the whole year, with winter sports and a lot of events around Tamworth and the June long weekend, everything sort of falls in Tamworth for that weekend," he said.

Many tables have already been booked by teams coming in for the rugby championships, while Mr Power is expecting to see a lot of baseballers walk through the door too.

Given the wild and woolly weather expected, he is also predicting people who would have otherwise spent the weekend outside will be seeking sanctuary at pubs.
