Freezing temperatures in Tamworth becoming a common occurrence this year

In 2020 there were 16 nights below 0 degrees in Tamworth, less than a week into winter this year and there have already been nine.

While there were no freezing temperatures recorded prior to winter beginning last year, they started early in 2021 with the first two occurring in April.

May was a major point of difference though, with five below-zero nights forcing locals to start their fires, blast their heating or reach for the extra covers earlier than normal.

The best example of that - or worst depending on how you look at it - was Monday, May 17 when it dropped to -4 degees Celsius.

It has reached freezing twice in June so far, but the worse may be yet to come with July and August recording the most amount of below-zero temps in 2020, with seven and five respectively.

It is yet to be seen what by-products the cold weather may have, aside from pushing up people's energy bills, but farmers will certainly be hoping it may help reduce the mouse population throughout the New England.

Rain will likely need to accompany the freezing temperatures if that is to happen, but there has only been 44mm come down since the beginning of May - 15.8 of that coming last Friday.
