Cattle theft charges: man accused of two separate Glen Innes cattle thefts after stock stolen on March 2, and October 2020

The 27-year-old man stands accused of two separate cattle thefts in the Glen Innes area in March this year, as well as another incident last October.

He was charged by rural crime detectives after they went to a Glen Innes home on Tuesday. He was handed a notice to front court on two counts of stealing cattle, as well as two counts of aggravated animal cruelty.

Police allege he was behind the theft of 25 weaners that were taken from a property and loaded onto a truck in Glen Innes on the night of March 2.

As the truck drove north from Glen Innes, some of the cattle fell from the truck on Church Street, where nearby locals helped herd the cattle to a safe location and contacted police.

From there, police claim the accused continued travelling north where more cattle fell from the truck and had to be destroyed.

In late May, police released CCTV of a truck they believed was at the centre of the investigation, after a public appeal for help earlier that month.

The breakthrough in the investigation came on Tuesday and officers homed in on the 27-year-old at a Glen Innes address.

Detectives will also allege in court he was involved in the theft of eight cattle from a second Glen Innes property in October, last year.

The man has been ordered to front Glen Innes Local Court in mid-July.
