Tamworth 65 Roses Day: locals spend up big to support those with cystic fibrosis

Tara Bartlett and Jo Jones have been on a mission for the past month selling single-stem roses to raise awareness of CF and much needed funds to support those in need. They each have a child who has the condition.

The pair set up shop in Tamworth Square on Friday and within two-and-a-half hours they'd completely sold out.

Mrs Bartlett, who's daughter Lexi has CF, was blown away by the response.

"We had a few people coming up and saying 'my son has CF' or 'my grandchild has CF' so it was nice for those stories to come out," she said.

"It was lovely to meet those people and do some networking as well as doing so much awareness.

"It's nice that so many people know what 65 Roses Day was, but linking it to CF is the next mission because most people weren't totally aware of what it was."

Through pre-sales, sales on the day, and other donations, she anticipates they would've raised about $3000 for Cystic Fibrosis Community Care (CFCC).

"It goes towards community events and community fundraisers so people can raise awareness as well as supporting those that have CF and their families," Mrs Bartlett said.

It's the first time the two mums have sold roses for the day, and they're already planning on doing it again next year.

"Thank you to everyone that supported us, especially our close friends and family. Without them this day would not have gone ahead, that's for sure, and to everyone that bought roses," she told the Leader.

"Every little bit helps in raising awareness and funds so that hopefully one day CF can stand for 'cure found' rather than 'cystic fibrosis'."

Cystic fibrosis causes an abnormal build-up of thick and sticky mucus in the lungs, airways and digestive system. Treatment requires intensive daily physiotherapy to clear the lungs and airways, countless medications and frequent hospitalisations.
