Gunnedah death: critical incident launched after man dies in Gunnedah hospital following struggle in Herbert Street

A critical incident investigation has been launched into the incident which occurred at a home in Herbert Street about 8pm.

Oxley police were called to the home to check on the welfare of a 27-year-old man after concerns for his behaviour.

Police allege when they arrived he became aggressive when two officers tried to speak with him.

Officers said they forced to deploy capsicum spray as well as taser when a struggle broke out. The man then lost consciousness, a spokesperson for police said.

Police immediately rendered first aid to the man before ambulance officers moved in.

Paramedics then rushed the man to Gunnedah hospital but he died a short time later.

A female police officer was injured in the struggle and was also hospitalised for a bite wound to her right forearm, as well as a knee injury.

A critical incident investigation has now been launched into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The State Crime Command's Homicide Squad has been called in to lead the investigation, which will also be subject to an independent review by authorities.
