Vella has played in the championships "a couple" times and expected another tough tournament.
"So far, we've never had any luck. They're just a bit too good for us but who knows. You got to be in it to win it," Vella said.
Matches will be played at South Tamworth Bowling Club, West Tamworth Bowling Club and Tamworth City Bowling Club with teams of 12 representing each zone.
Vella's team will kick off their championships with matches at West Tamworth - something the retired farmer was looking forward to.
"We're going to play at West Tamworth on the top green this year, that's a plus - playing in front of all our friends... it's good," Vella said.
Zones are put into four pools with the top two sides from each pool qualifying for the quarter finals.
Matches are played with each zone split into three teams of fours to play over 21 ends. Scores are then combined to see who progresses.
State and international players will be participating during the week with all finals being held at South Tamworth Bowling Club.
The seniors competition runs from May 17-19 while the opens runs from May 20-22.
