Tamworth free microchipping, vaccinations day coming up on May 27

Tamworth Regional Council will host a free event to have dogs and cats microchipped, vaccinated, and have their general health checked up.

The first two microchips will be provided to each family for free, then every animal after that will cost $10.

RSPCA and TAFE representatives will be checking the animal's health to ensure they're ready to go forward with vaccinations.

The council's compliance manager Ross Briggs said the rate of animals dropped into the pound without up-to-date microchips usually stayed the same because it happened all the time.

"The microchipping and keeping those details up to date is the main thing, so if they're lost and they're found and dropped into a vet or pound, we can scan them, contact the owners and reunite them," he said.

"If they turn up here or at a vet, we're finding we try to make contact and they go 'oh we sold that dog or cat ages ago' and we then use our Facebook page to try and find the owners."

He said there had been a few extra stray dogs coming through the pound gates with many being on heat.

"The female dogs go on heat so a lot of the males then escape their yards and go looking for a mate and then they get picked up and brought to council," Mr Briggs said.

He stressed that it wasn't a "just turn up" event, and registration was essential.
