May said the signs on the weekend were promising.
"The backline - they played really well," May said.
"Sam Williams and Matt Gardner are our two centre backs this year taking over the roles from Ross and Troy.
"It'll take a few games to get used to it but we'll get there."
May said his side "dominated for most of the game".
"It was a good win. We created plenty of chances in the game and hit the post a couple times," May said.
"South created a couple chances too and our goalkeeper [Owen Rogers] made a couple good saves when it was 1-0."
Kurt Barrow missed the first grade clash due to a minor injury and instead played reserve grade.
Meanwhile, new Tamworth FC captain Hayden Davidson continues to flourish in his new role.
"He's taken over from Ross [Price] who's heading over to America," May said.
"I think he's thriving. He's playing really well.
"He's a bit frustrated that he hasn't scored yet but he set Josh Bartlett's goal up with a nice little cross.
"They're combining pretty well."
In the other matches, Gunnedah FC defeated Moore Creek 5-2 while Oxley Vale Attunga beat Kootingal 5-1.
