Mother's Day 2021: Tamworth True Facebook group event aims to recreate every cake recipe in iconic Women's Weekly Birthday Cake Book

Jessie Smith is taking part in a Tamworth True challenge to bake and decorate every cake that was once printed in the original Women's Weekly Children's Birthday Cake Book.

Each resident that signs up to the challenge gets assigned a cake to bake from the book before Mother's Day. Ms Smith got the 'Number 1' - the same cake her mother made her on her first birthday.

"It was really special, I thought it would be fun to do something with my daughter that was done for me," she said.

Ms Smith and her five-year-old daughter had fun making a mess in the kitchen to bake and decorate the cake.

She said she's planning to eat the cake on Wednesday, to mark one week since the due date of the baby she's expecting at the moment.

"I thought this would keep me busy," she said.

"It was fun sharing some skills about how to bake.

"I always wanted to make my kids' cakes because my mum always made mine."

That might be why the self-confessed "terrible" baker has four copies of Women's Weekly cake books.

"I have really strong memories of it and I always remember getting to pick a cake for my birthday," she said.

The challenge will see those signed up recreate iconic designs like the swimming pool, the train and the duck before Mother's Day on Sunday.

Attempts are attracting attention on The Great Tamworth True Cake Bake page on Facebook.
