LOCAL veterans were acknowledged on Sunday morning as they walked up Peel Street as part of Tamworth's Anzac Day commemorations.

Vintage military vehicles transported some of the returned service men and women, who were surrounded on either side by members of the community who turned out to show their appreciation.
President of the Tamworth RSL sub-branch, Jayne McCarthy, said it was an extremely emotional affair.
"It was such a proud moment, I was really happy to see the crowd that gathered and it does fill you with pride when people start clapping and the children acknowledge you, it's very special," she said.

The usual march didn't go ahead this year, but Ms McCarthy believes people were very understanding and forgiving of the situation.
"I'm very grateful, it's a tricky situation but I think the community can appreciate the difficulties that we're in and the limitations that were put upon us, and we're just glad something could be done."
