At Lightning Ridge on the weekend, Thorning combined with his son and current doubles partner, Tim, and Dylan Eather - someone he used to combine with on the greens all the time.
"It was just work commitments with Dylan - that stopped us playing a bit - and Timmy has come along now and I like to play with Timmy to help him out - he's always learning," Thorning said.
"Dylan and I used to play together a lot when I first moved here and we're still playing some stuff together but his brother and father started as well so he's taken them under his wing."

Thorning was glad he could link back up with Eather. Thorning rates the 28-year-old bowler highly.
"He's a pretty good bowler and doesn't get the accolades he deserves. I think he should be in the zone team," Thorning said.
Everything lined up for the Thornings and Eather to play together in the state triples which culminated in the Gunnedah Services and Bowling Club team coming away with a comfortable win in the zone final.
They beat Moree Services 26-10 to book their spot in the state finals in August.
Thorning said there'd be tough competition at the state finals but he gave his side some chance.
"If you get a good draw... you only have to play well for two days. If you play well for two days it's achievable," Thorning said.
"It can be done but then again, you're playing against professional bowlers - that's their job."
Continuing a good weekend for Gunnedah was Caleb Cameron, John Pryor and Brett Green being named the Zone 3 Presidents Reserve Triples Champions. They beat Lightning Ridge 24-21 in the zone final.
The success is a good sign for the Gunnedah Services and Bowling Club where Thorning is also the bowls coordinator.
"We're going good. Our membership average age is getting lower and I reckon in two or three years we'll see the best of the club," Thorning said.
The title of Zone 3 Senior Triples Champions went to South Tamworth (Greg Harris, Steve Graham and Jeff Myers) who beat Inverell Sporties 23-18 in the final at Lightning Ridge.
