Andrew Thomas Johnston did not appear in Tamworth Local Court when his case was mentioned, but the court heard he had already pleaded guilty to the charge against him.
Aboriginal Legal Service solicitor Rebecca Gidlow told the court the sentencing could take up to an hour, due to some complexities in the case.
Johnston has admitted to recklessly wounding another man in the company of others during a violent attack on a West Tamworth street in May last year.

DPP prosecutor Rayshele Martin warned there "may be a lot in this sentence".
"It's quite a serious wounding, is that the issue?" magistrate Julie Soars asked, examining the papers.
"Yes, and I understand there is a number of co-accused," Ms Martin said.
The co-accused remain before the court and will be dealt with separately to Johnston, the court was told. Ms Martin said the others charged in connection to the same incident would face another court.
Ms Soars told the lawyers to "see how we go", and that at least submissions could be heard on the next occasion, even if the matter had to be adjourned again for a judgement to be delivered later.
"At least that way there will be some progress," she said.
Johnston's sentencing date was set for late May and he was ordered to appear via video link from custody, where he remains.
Two charges against Johnston involving robbery in company were withdrawn by prosecutors, during the proceedings.
Johnston remains bail-refused.
