Ryley Douglas Mackay's assault charges adjourned in Tamworth court after dog squad arrest on New Year's Day

Ryley Douglas Mackay, 24, is on bail and appeared in Tamworth Local Court on Wednesday as the prosecution and defence discussed the brief of evidence.

Mackay is accused of punching a 41-year-old man, who then suffered bleeding on the brain, at a taxi rank in the Tamworth CBD in the early hours of New Year's Day.

The police case is that officers tracked Mackay to Bridge Street, where he allegedly struggled with officers before he managed to escape and run from the scene.

The dog squad chased the accused down and cornered him, and he was arrested and charged.

The court heard on Wednesday that the brief of evidence in the matter was not compliant.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Rebecca Skivington said the brief was "an interesting one" and was in the process of "being checked".

"It's still not a compliant brief," magistrate Julie Soars said, marking the papers for an adjournment.

Mackay has been charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm - an offence which carries up to 25 years' imprisonment, if he's found guilty.

He also faces charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm; common assault; assaulting a police officer in the execution of duty; and inmate escape or attempt to escape from lawful custody.

The 24-year-old sat in the courtroom but stayed silent through the proceedings, and has not yet been required to enter pleas.

The brief of evidence was ordered to be handed over by late March during the last mention, but the matter was adjourned again on Wednesday.

Mackay has been on conditional bail since he was charged. He was briefly hospitalised in Tamworth following his arrest after suffering puncture wounds to his leg during his dramatic arrest by the Oxley Dog Unit.

In court, Ms Soars ordered bail to continue but cut back his reporting to police to three days-per-week.
