The fire in Laura's belly was lit after competing at a school swimming carnival.
The Tamworth City Swimming Club member finished up with one ribbon but was hungry to improve.
"We had a school carnival and I just wanted to do better," Laura said.

Laura was scheduled to compete at the championships last year before the COVID-19 pandemic hit so had to wait until now to make her debut.
And she's shown plenty of improvement in that time as well.
While she qualified for two races in 2020, this year she'll be going away for six separate events - all of them being for either freestyle (50m, 100m, and 200m) or breaststroke (50m, 100m, and 200m).
They are her two favourite strokes - she can't split them in terms of which she likes most.
One thing she does know is she's looking forward to competing in Sydney.
"I'm excited. Happy that I made it again," she said.
Joining Laura at the championships will be 360 Scully Park Swimming Club's Chelsea Smith.
Chelsea will also swim in the 11 girls age group but will be competing in the 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly.
She has been training alongside Laura over the past couple of weeks as 360 Scully Park transition to a new coach following Simon Andren's departure.
Tamworth City Swimming Club coach Nicolas Monet said both girls showed plenty of potential in the pool and wanted to learn and improve.
The Kootingal Moonbi Swimming Club will also be represented at the Junior State Age Championships.
Caitlin and Jaime Grobler have both qualified for the championships.
Caitlin will compete in the 12 girls 50m butterfly while Jaime is set to race in the 11 girls 50m breaststroke.
