Hillvue Public School Anzac Day plans under way with no school march on

This year, the march will not go forward after the Tamworth RSL sub-branch and the Tamworth Regional Council decided it was too risky with the threat of COVID still in the air.

But there's still going to be plenty happening at Hillvue.

Deputy principal Jayne Johnson said they would be hosting a whole school assembly on the Friday before the important annual day.

"We're very lucky here, we have a staff member who plays the bagpipes, so he'll play the bagpipes while the children lay a wreath in our hall," Ms Johnson said.

"We usually have a guest speaker but the principal will speak and talk about Anzac Day, have a laying of the wreath, bagpipes, and we'll sing the national anthem.

"It's a very serious ceremony and the children respond respectfully. We usually take the wreath up to the Anzac Park gates in the afternoon."

She said the school was "so disappointed" the march was cancelled as it was "something we look forward to".

"Our captains don't get to experience another service in the town hall, because that's a very important event for the leaders of our school to attend, but also for our children to understand the importance of the event, and part of that is marching with fellow students," she told the Leader.

But she said Anzac Day was important for all children to learn about, and so each class would also be doing lessons leading up to April 25.

"It's not just the past, it's the present," Ms Johnson said.

"You've got to think of it being age appropriate, what does Anzac stand for for the younger children, whereas our older children would understand where the wars occurred around the world.

"Also the present day, what are we doing in the present day to ensure Australia is a safe place?"
