Man, aged 20, rescued after falling down Summit Lookout in Kaputar National Park, near Narrabri

The man had been with a group of people at about 6.30 pm on Sunday when he fell over a handrail at the Summit Lookout of Kaputar National Park, near Narrabri.

The 20-year-old slid about 10 metres down the steep terrain and was unable to climb back due to the wild weather conditions at the time.

Officers attached to Oxley Police District were called to the scene, and with the assistance of Ambulance NSW and the NSW Volunteer Rescue Association - Narrabri Rescue Squad (VRA), the man was winched up the face of the Summit.

The man was taken to Narrabri hospital for observation.

A spokesperson for the Narrabri VRA said it's believed the incident happened after the man was sitting on the railing.

"Thankfully the casualty came to rest on a ledge approximately 20-25m below," the spokesperson said online.

"One of our operators scaled the rockface five times to ensure the casualty, his two mates who went down to care for him and the ambulance paramedic all safely return to the platform."

But the weather proved challenging for rescue crews.

"Vertical Rescues are physically demanding in favourable weather conditions, but this rescue took place after dark, began in foggy conditions progressing to a storm front," the spokesperson said.

"The whole team worked great, and we give a massive shout out to the two police officers and the two paramedics who did a massive job as part of the hauling party to get all persons back up the hill."
