A 40-year-old man has been refused bail in court, after he was arrested in Armidale on allegations of slavery.

James Robert Davis was charged by officers on Thursday, following an Australian Federal Police investigation.
The 40-year-old is facing charges of possessing a slave, reducing a person to slavery and causing a person to enter or remain in servitude.
Davis was not required to enter pleas to the charges on Friday, but if found guilty, he faces a maximum penalty of 25 years' imprisonment.

The alleged offences occurred in the Sydney suburb of Maroubra between 2013 and 2015, according to police.
Davis, who had been refused bail by police late on Thursday and spent the night in custody, appeared via video link in Inverell Local Court on Friday.
He was dressed in a grey suit and white shirt for the brief court appearance.
Magistrate Holly Kemp considered moving the case to Sydney's Central Local Court, but it was eventually adjourned for eight weeks for a brief of evidence to be served.
Davis made no bid for bail, and it was formally refused by Ms Kemp.
The case will return to Armidale Local Court next week where Davis is expected to make a bail application.
