Tamworth weather: severe storm warning for parts of the North West Slopes and Plains and Northern Tablelands

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that severe thunderstorms may lead to flash flooding in parts of the North West Slopes and Plains and Northern Tablelands.

SES advice is to move cars under cover or away from trees, secure loose items and keep at least eight metres away from fallen power lines.

For emergency help in floods and storms call the SES on 132 500.

SEVERE storms were all bark and no bite for some while others were rattled with heavy rainfall and damaging winds.

Clouds are set to roll in again this afternoon as the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) predicts an 80 per cent chance of showers and likely thunderstorms.

Tamworth recorded 26mm of rainfall, while Gunnedah received just 2.6mm.

Five SES crews were kept busy until midnight with 21 calls for assistance across the New England North West with the majority coming from Tamworth and Armidale, superintendent Mitchell Parker said.

"They were primarily leaking roofs or trees that came down, we had trees on roads or properties with sheds leaning up against houses and things like that," he said.

"The KFC on Bridge Street was one of the only ones we were called to that was commercially affected but it wasn't too bad.

"There's more thunderstorm activity predicted for this afternoon, so we are working with the BOM to monitor it and respond to it - people should keep an eye out for any warnings."

No severe weather warnings have been issued for the region at this stage, but storms can be expected throughout the afternoon on Tuesday.
