In his brief time with the club, van Aanholt said the passion of all involved instantly shined through.
"I'm pretty excited. They have a very passionate board and secretary manager," van Aanholt said.
"It's a very passionate community - the harness racing community - and hopefully I'll be able to play my part in that."
Van Aanholt steps into the position a year after he retired as principal at St Edward's at the end of 2019.
He held that position for a year but had spent seven years as principal of St Nicholas Primary School before that.
The former principal said skills he picked up during his career - such as governance and strategic planning - would cross over to his new role. He's now looking forward to working with the board.
"I've just jumped in the chair so I'll attend a few board meetings and be directed by the board and see what plans they have for the club," he said.
He added: "It's a very valuable contributor to the Tamworth economy so it's important that it functions well and provides those employment opportunities to not just trainers and drivers but ground staff and race day staff," he said.
THRC deputy chairperson and director Joyce Walsh said the board was "very happy to have Stef come on board".
The board also made note of Maughan's valuable contributions to the Tamworth Harness Racing Club.
"We would like to thank our outgoing chairperson Julie Maughan for all her hard work and efforts during her four-year term with the club," Walsh said.
"The board of directors appreciate her time and the hard work she has put into the club and wish her success."
THRC is also welcoming a new director into the fold in Kerry Brown. She joins Joyce Walsh, Scotty-Jon Welsh and Nicholas Walsh on the board.
