Robert Munn says prizemoney disparity causes low numbers at Tamworth greyhound meeting

President Robert Munn described those numbers as "very disappointing" and said he knew why the numbers were so low.

"The prizemoney," he said.

"You can race for $250 or wait for when they go around in Gunnedah.

"The other five races [on Saturday] were $400 [for the winner] and in Gunnedah, they're of the same calibre, but it's $1700."

Munn said the club was a whisker away from canning the meeting.

"We were close to it yesterday," Munn said.

"I think we only had 37 nominations and then four scratchings on top of that - so 33 dogs."

In a statement, a Greyhound Racing NSW spokesperson said they were continually reviewing prizemoney levels and working with clubs.

They also said a drop in breeding numbers had impacted the number of dogs available for meetings.

"In recent times GRNSW has transitioned a number of non-TAB tracks into TAB tracks and this is an ongoing process," a GRNSW spokesperson said.

"As such a club like Gunnedah has gone from racing 16 times at non-TAB level to now racing 26 times at TAB level, which gives participants in those regions more options and opportunities to race at a TAB venues for TAB prizemoney.

"We do however understand that there is a place for non-TAB racing, and we have, and will, continue to make every effort to support non-TAB racing and those clubs.

"And what we must not forget is that breeding numbers have been significantly reduced in recent years as a result of industry reforms, and this would naturally impact numbers of dogs available for meetings, in particular non-TAB racing."

Munn has made contact with GRNSW and plans to do so again to discuss the issues.
