Tamworth Australia Day concert to be monitored by COVID marshalls to keep locals healthy

This means no dancing or singing to the music performed by some of Tamworth's local bands, and social distancing between spots on the Bicentennial Park grass.

Tamworth Regional Council events manager Barry Harley addressed the media on Monday morning to give an update on the rules that would be in place for attendees.

"Community health is our number one requirement and we'll actually have socially distancing ambassadors, a double standard ticketing system with both the NSW government app ... plus the ticketing will be recorded, and that will then cover all the requirements of the NSW Health orders as they stand today," Mr Harley said.

"We'd ask the public to actually abide by those rules and if they're asked by our ambassadors to either be seated or to be quiet, to actually take that on board in the mood that it's meant.

"We will go to great lengths so all the health requirements are met, but more than negative [responses], the positives have been heartfelt and that's why we're keen to go forward with that particular celebration."

He said the Australia Day concert "probably heralds the first of what we see as many live events back in the region" off the back of a very tough time for all Tamworthians.

"We did witness a great loss to the economy, with the cancellation of the festival as we know it, and the elements the council provides in the festival which are all those free atmospheric elements like the cavalcade, the buskers, the free stage, all of which still could not be held in that current form," he said.

"We do see it as our responsibility to work with the various industries to recreate that economy and get a lot more activity happening in the economy to stimulate those businesses."

Gates will be open for the free concert from 6pm, with entertainment starting at 7pm.

This will be kicked off by Kamilaroi man Len Waters, who will hold a traditional smoking ceremony and the welcome to country.

"Then we're going to have just a frolicking sort of cover band called 'The Cover Band' which will just play all those well-known songs which will hopefully lift the spirits of our local region, and then we'll follow it up by ... 'The Bushwackers'," Mr Harley said.

"Then we'll finish off with a fireworks display at about 9pm."
