NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro says Victoria must 'act accordingly' on border

"Firstly, I don't want to lecture what other state Premiers do or don't do," he said in Albury today.

"When Victoria hit 180 cases of COVID, not to mention the 700 cases a day, that's when NSW had no choice but to close the border to protect our citizens.

"But we were always quick to remove that border restriction.

"Here we have a case where in the last couple days, we've had zero cases, and that'll continue; we've only had a couple of cases of community transmission.

"So in one way or another, we're in control of this virus.

"What Victoria needs to do is respond to that arrangement, that there is no real risk to Victoria.

"I urge Daniel Andrews and the Victorian Government to give us the same consideration we gave them, and we lifted those restrictions sooner rather than later.

"There's no doubt the permit system, and what's happening on the border right now, should be lifted."

Mr Barilaro said he would be meeting with businesses to discuss the impact of border closures.

"When we lifted those borders, we were working with the business community, and we ran a second round of stimulus to support those businesses," he said.

"This time ... the border has been closed by the Victorian Government - really, the onus is on them - but today, I will be meeting with a number of people on the border.

"I'm open to suggestions and seeing what else we can do to support those businesses in those communities."

Mr Barilaro was in Albury to announce a regional job precinct at NEXUS, which will cut red-tape and encourage business development.

Daily cases in Victoria did not exceed 10 for the last six weeks of the NSW border closure, with multiple days of zero cases.

The NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian at the time said the border remaining up was to see the impact of restrictions being lifted on case numbers.
