For Melted Moments' Guyra-based trainer, Paul Grills, it was a bitter blow.
He described the Armidale horse as "a great mate, and he'll be sadly missed and very hard to replace".
Grills had a long association with Melted Moments, who was owned by a syndicate of female friends that included Grills' wife, Angela.
"The girls have owned him for all [his races] bar his first start," Grill said, adding: "I've trained him most of the time, apart from 12 months when I was out of action."
Melted Moments' wins included a Manilla Cup and last year's Ballina Cup.
His last win was an open handicap over 1530m at Murwillumbah last March.
He also has 11 minor placings.
