Tamworth crime: man's body found in campervan was undiscovered for days, police said

Oxley Police District crime manager, Acting Inspector, Jason Darcy addressed the media on Tuesday afternoon, and confirmed the grim news.

The incident is still being investigated, so the acting inspector was unable to provide extensive details.

"It's been days so I can't comment any further, but it's only early stages," he said.

He said the man was still unidentified, but was "confident" he would be identified by the end of the day [Tuesday].

The man's body was found in the campervan at a rest area near Goonoo Goonoo Station, at about 11.35am on Monday.

Oxley Police District officers received a call detailing a concern for welfare from a passerby, who found the body inside the van.

"As a result, investigators ... attended the location and commenced an investigation," Acting Inspector Darcy said.

"During the course of the day, we'd obtained information about that matter, but this morning we made a public appeal.

"We're looking for information concerning if anyone had been around that rest area over the last few days and seen the campervan, to contact police or Crime Stoppers."

Police said drawers inside of the van had been opened when they arrived on the scene, and a generator previously seen there was missing.

The crime manager said it was too early to comment on whether this was suspicious, or if the death of the man was suspicious.

"There has to be a post-mortem," he said.

Acting Inspector Darcy urged anyone with information or with dashcam footage passing by the rest area to come forward.

"You don't know .. what's on that dashcam could be relevant to the investigation," he said.

"We'll put the information together like a timeline and continue our investigation."
